Pokémon GO: New Event on the Horizon
Niantic have been known for keeping specific information hidden before making announcements. The community however are known to find clues in the code long before an official announcement arrives. A new asset has been discovered in the code which indicates an event may be on the horizon in relation to a partnership that was announced in January this year.
The above images were discovered by u/Chrales and posted on r/TheSilphRoad. They feature the words Global Goals and a circle made by 17 different colored segments. Quite clearly they are in reference to the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development Initiative. Launched in September, 2015 when 193 world leaders agreed on 17 specific goals that the world should strive towards in order to reduce and eventually eliminate poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. See below for what the 17 goals are:
The Global Goals initiative already has several partners to help achieve these outcomes. They include the likes of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Mastercard, Pearson, Sawa, UNICEF and the World Food Program as lead partners with Google, Don’t Panic, Freuds, Iris and Mediacom as supporting partners. In January this year, Niantic inc. and the Pokémon Company partnered with Global Goals Campaign and Project Everyone and hosted a small scale event in Davos, Switzerland. The event added 17 stops to mark the different goals and a gym. It appears they may be ready to expand on the existing partnership and potentially release it as a global event.
While we can only hope and speculate for a global event, this discovery comes right before the start of Global Goals Week. Going from September 16th to September 23rd this year, Global Goals Week coincides with the UN General Assembly Week held every September at the UN Headquarters in New York City. “Global Goals Week brings together individuals, governments, business, international organizations, civil society, and other partners during the opening of the UN General Assembly each September to continue momentum and cultivate ideas, solutions, and partnerships that are measuring progress, continuing to drive action on, and promoting accountability for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.” (Source: Global Goals Week)
Within this week is another special event; Goalkeepers 2017, run by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. GoalKeepers 2017 is an event run alongside the Global Goals Awards, also held in New York City on the 19th and 20th of September, with speakers such as Barrack Obama, Bill Gates, Malala Yousafzai and Melinda Gates. They recognize the immense measures taken towards reaching the goals already but remind us that there is no point stopping half way.
All we know for certain is that the t-shirts have been added into the coding. What stems after this is pure speculation. However, it is likely that Niantic will be partnering with these events through the Global Goals campaign in order to utilize their unique ability to connect millions of people worldwide to achieve goals. I hope you use this opportunity to learn more about the amazing and important work done by the Global Goals campaign and endeavor to spread the word about these goals.
