Eevee Evolution Guide: Who is the Strongest Pick – Umbreon, Espeon, Flareon, Jolteon, or Vaporeon?
Niantic has finally given us Generation Two in “Pokémon GO,” which means we’ve got more options for our favorite little Pokémon Eevee. But which evolution should you pick – the Gen 1 evolutions Flareon, Jolteon or Vaporeon, or the new Gen 2 Umbreon or Espeon?
How to Evolve Eevee into Gen 1 Evolutions Flareon, Jolteon or Vaporeon
Evolving Eevee into its resepective evolutions from the Kanto region stays pretty much the same even after the addition of Johto region Pokémon in “Pokémon GO.” As a refresher, here is a rundown of the three generation 1 Eevee evolutions:
Jolteon – change name to Sparky
Vaporeon – change name to Rainer
Flareon – change name to Pyro
If you’re wondering where Niantic got these names, they weren’t random. These were the names of the trainers in the original “Pokémon” anime collectively known as the Eevee brothers.
To turn them into these Pokémon, change its name to the corresponding Eevee brother (example, if you want Flareon, change name to Pyro) prior to evolution (make sure there are no extra spaces in the name or else the process will fail, giving you a random Eevee instead).
Remember that you can now only do it ONCE per Eevee evolution type, so make sure you’re evolving the right Eevee before you proceed.
How to Evolve Eevee into Gen 2 Evolutions Umbreon and Espeon
Just like its Kanto counterparts, trainers can also obtain Umbreon and Espeon Eevee evolutions using the renaming method.
Espeon – change name to Sakura
Umbreon – change name to Tamao
Just like the Eevee Brothers, Sakura and Tamao are from the Kimono Sisters first seen in “Pokémon Silver and Gold.” They were also featured in the anime. Sakura’s main Pokémon is Espeon, while Tamao’s main is Umbreon, hence the names. The other sisters also have their own Eevee evolutions.
Another method is through the Buddy feature, which is similar to the original game’s Friendship system in “Pokémon Silver and Gold.” In the games, if Eevee reaches a certain number of friendship points, trainers can get Umbreon by evolving Eevee at night and Espeon by evolving Eevee during daytime.
There is a similar method in “Pokémon GO.” All you have to do is walk your Eevee 10km and collect 2 candies, then evolve. If evolved during daytime while the Eevee is your Buddy Pokémon, it will turn into Espeon. If evolved at night using the same method, it will turn into Umbreon.
As of the moment, unlike the naming method, this method currently has no limitations, which means you can evolve multiple Umbreons and Espeons using the Buddy system.
Which Eevee Evolution Should I Pick?
For defending gyms, Vaporeon is still the most effective out of all Eevee evolutions due to its type. For attacking gyms, Espeon is top choice among the five.
CP-wise, Vaporeon is still on top of the list with 3157 max CP, followed by Espeon at 3000 max CP. Flareon comes in third place at 2904, while Jolteon comes in at 2730 Max CP. Umbreon is at the bottom, with only 2052 max CP, making it the weakest among all current Eevee evolutions.
